Rainy Day Fun for Kids

By Autumn, NYC Lifestyle writer for NewYorkerApts.com

It’s raining again… Rainy days can be a bummer, especially when you have kids and live in New York City.  Rainy days usually mean that you and your children are stuck in your NYC apartment together all day, unable to venture outside.  Fret not though, my fellow NYC parents, I have a few solutions to keep boredom from beckoning.

First idea:  Make an arts and crafts box for rainy days.  In preparation for rainy days, put together a box of things that can be used to turn your New York apartment into an arts and crafts studio.  Some great items for such a box include: white and multicolored papers, magazines to cut apart, scissors, glue, glitter, markers, crayons, paints and paintbrushes, beads and string, and any other things that you think will spark your little one’s creativity.

Second idea: Get out those board games.  Board games are one of those activities that are perfect for playing inside your Big Apple apartment.  Have a selection of games for your children to pick from.  Let them pick their favorite games to play.  Who wouldn’t enjoy a game of Candy Land, Monopoly, Shoots & Ladders, or Pictionary?  Even as an adult, I still love board games.  Puzzles can also be fun to do on a rainy day.

Third idea: Pull out those old nostalgic photographs.  Turn your New York Apartment into a time machine.  Bring out old photos of family and your children.  Tell your children the stories behind the pictures they are looking at.  Pull out photos of your children when they were younger.  They will be able to look back and remember all the good times they have had.

Be creative.  There are tons of activities to do with children in your New York apartment.  To find a better NYC apartment for your rainy days inside, venture over to NewYorkerApts.com and find a cozy place to call home.

NY Couple Sues Park Ave. Building for Takeout Food

By Andrew Chow, JD at FindLaw.com

They’re mad as hell, and they’re not going to do takeout anymore.

A New York couple is suing the people in charge of their apartment building after a prolonged gas shutoff allegedly made their kitchen inoperable and forced them to eat takeout food for 10 months, the New York Post reports.

Louis Maione, 68, and wife Beverly Taki, 66, say they dished out $27,000 to cover restaurant bills because of the gas shutoff. Now they want the apartment building’s co-op board and management company to pick up the tab.

Louis Maione and Beverly Taki had lived in their Upper East Side building at 850 Park Avenue — also home to designer Kate Spade, according to the Post — for more than a decade, their takeout lawsuit states.

“We cooked all the time. We had people over for dinner all the time,” Maione told the Post.

But then the gas problem happened, beginning in October 2010. The couple’s lawsuit says they don’t know why the gas was shut off.

The shutoff forced Maione and Taki to cook on a hot plate when they didn’t get takeout. They had to entertain guests at fancy restaurants instead of at home. And building management, Gumley Haft Realty, allegedly refused to install electric ranges until the gas could be restored, the couple’s takeout lawsuit states.

All the while, Maione and Taki continued to pay $5,700 a month for apartment maintenance.

Jason Reitman looking for New York ‘Apartment’

by Darren Franich

Jason Reitman’s popular series of live performances of beloved screenplays is coming to New York City later this month. After staging The Breakfast Club, The Apartment, The Princess Bride, Shampoo, The Big Lebowski, and Reservoir Dogs with all-star casts, Reitman is planning to host a reading of The Apartment in Manhattan on April 27. According to the New York Times, Reitman will use a different cast than he did in the original Apartment reading — where Steve Carell played the Jack Lemmon part and Natalie Portman filled in for Shirley MacLaine — so feel free to start throwing out your best guesses about which NYC-centric actors will make the cut. (There’s gotta be a part for Chris Messina somewhere in there, right?)

Kim Kardashian Spotted Leaving Kanye West’s Apartment

Things certainly seem to be heating up again between hip-hop superstar Kanye West and reality-TV diva Kim Kardashian, and now she’s been spotted leaving his NYC apartment — sporting the same outfit she was wearing the night before when she and West reportedly hit the movies together.

According to TMZ , the relationship is “just starting,” though we’d like to add the word “again” in there, as the two have been linked previously. During her visit to “RapFix Live,” West’s ex-girlfriend Amber Rose told Sway Calloway that West and Kardashian “were both cheating on me and [Kim's ex] Reggie [Bush] with each other.”

NewYorkerApts.com Simplifies the Search for NYC Apartments & Roommates

Our website scraps the classifieds-style approach and offers a condensed, visual, and intuitive way for New Yorkers to find apartments & roommates in all 5 boroughs!

If you’re seeking no fee NYC apartments, West Village listings, or Manhattan roommates, the following article pertains to you:

New York, NY –

Upon visiting NewYorkerApts.com, the narrative of the site’s creation is immediately evident in the homepage text. “We got tired of brokered listings, of apartments that come with fees, of spam-filled classifieds-style websites. So we designed & launched this website. It’s new. It’s the quintessential site for finding an apartment or roommate in NYC.”

Indeed, New Yorkers have long lamented the frustrating process of finding a suitable apartment in The Big Apple. There is a maze of obstacles and considerations. Listings that initially look promising turn out to be brokered. Affordable apartments sometimes necessitate unreasonably long commutes. A recent article authored by Insurent Lease Guaranty soberly states that “the challenges for renters are: high demand from many who prefer to rent, very high prices, low vacancies, occasional above ask bids, multiple applications, very tough qualification standards, short window of opportunity or time on the market, waiting lists for apartments before they are listed which limit the number of apartments actually reaching the market, and less supply due to fewer new luxury rental buildings opening in 2012.” Convoluted, spam-filled, and poorly organized websites and classifieds-style sites don’t lessen the difficulties of finding the perfect apartment in the city that never sleeps.

But a viable solution is apparent in NewYorkerApts.com – a site that is proud to offer outstanding online services to the greatest city in the world. NYC is a vibrant place and a hub for finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. All 5 boroughs are desirable places to live and each borough offers unique advantages. NewYorkerApts.com aspires to offer a continuous stream of apartment listings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx.

In addition to the main website, the blog, located at newyorkerapts.com/blog, features NYC news, NYC lifestyle articles, and information about NYC apartments. NewYorkerApts.com has clear potential to function as a portal for the community. The site’s staff want New Yorkers to be able to stay in NYC – instead of being forced out of it due to lack of a decent place to live. The site’s usefulness and fresh approach is evident in the nav bar. The observable intent was to condense all of the site functionality into a sleek, expanding nav bar that is colored like a taxi cab.

You can search NYC apartments by borough, rent amount, number of rooms, and keywords. You can also search by advanced criteria – available by date, rental type, number of bathrooms, lease terms, pets allowed, utilities, and amenities. Some New Yorkers have particular preferences with regards to apartment amenities. And on www.newyorkerapts.com, those New Yorkers can seek out NYC apartments with amenities such as on-site washer/dryer, washer/dryer in unit, exercise facilities, alarm system, furnishing, patio or balcony, walk-in closets, free wifi, pool, doorman, air conditioning, dishwasher, hardwood floors, view, and parking space.

As the site picks up steam, listings are increasing in quantity. In the room-for-rent section in which New Yorkers seek out roommates, one recent listing is titled “Room: $1250 east village share.” The Current Occupants section prompts the poster to specify the individuals residing in the apartment – removing any ambiguity that may exist on tersely worded classifieds-style posts on other sites. A poster in the rooms-for-rent section is also prompted to specify lifestyle information that will surely prevent roommate personality clashes from occurring – every poster selects his or her “Noise Level” and “Cleanliness Level.”

Another room-for-rent listing is titled “Room: Two College Students Looking for 3rd Roommate.” This NYC roommate listing on www.newyorkerapts.com is an indication that the site is starting to appeal to young New Yorkers, and may very well become the quintessential site for finding a NYC apartment and connecting with roommates in NYC.

These are all reasons why New Yorkers are finding hope in this new apartment and roommate website. Finding a NYC apartment doesn’t need to be a challenge anymore. The people of this city can now find great listings in an easy, intuitive way. If you’re a landlord looking to post an apartment listing, you can currently do so for free – for a limited time. The rooms-for-rent section is also free. Whether you’re interested in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or The Bronx, NewYorkerApts.com is the place to go for NYC apartments and roommates. Tell your friends.

Braving NYC Rainy Weather

Hi,

I’m Autumn. I’m a contributing writer to the NewYorkerApts.com Blog.  I will be writing mostly in the NYC Lifestyle category, and am honored to contribute to a site that aspires to become the ultimate NYC apartment finder. (I also write about metaphysical and spiritual subjects at MysticAutumn.com.) Many people encounter a substantial degree of difficulty when they are trying to find housing in Manhattan. And it isn’t necessarily easier if you’re looking in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx. But NewYorkerApts.com is all about solutions. A problem certainly exists, but it is a problem that can be solved using smart, streamlined, and sophisticated online technology. The site will make it easy to find rent stabilized apartments and luxury apartments – and for that, we can all let out a collective sigh of relief!

It’s fairly gray outside today. The weather report says that there may be a thunderstorm in spots, but it’s getting warmer. Tonight, it is supposed to turn cloudy and breezy. New York City isn’t exactly known as being a rainy city (unlike, say, Seattle), but let’s face it- when it is rainy, it can be pretty miserable. Most of us get to work by walking, catching a cab, taking the subway, or getting on the bus. We tend to spend our fair share of time outside, braving whatever the weather gods decide to throw our way. Luckily, there are a few ways to make the New York City rain more tolerable.

One of the most miserable parts of being unprepared for rainy weather is getting water in your shoes.  When it is raining, wear rain boots. You can bring a second pair of shoes with you for when you get to your destination. If possible, keep a pair of rain boots at work, just in case the weather sneaks up on you.

Umbrellas are an obvious rainy weather staple, but when it is windy, umbrellas may not be of much use.  Invest in a waterproof coat to keep yourself from becoming soaking wet.  If possible, try to keep in mind that heavier fabrics tend to take longer to dry.

In a worst-case scenario when you are completely unprepared for the weather, you can use a scarf, unimportant book, or plastic bag to cover your head.  Plastic bags may look silly on your feet, but in a worst case scenario, this drastic, socially embarrassing measure can possibly keep your shoes from being ruined.

When you get back to your apartment, make sure to dry your clothes, coats, and shoes as to not attract mold.  If you are looking for an apartment or know someone who is, head to NewYorkerApts.com to find the perfect shelter from rain. It’s a great site for finding NYC loft apartments and no fee rentals.

Your friend,

Autumn

And we don’t take that responsibility lightly. Well, we do to a certain extent – there are small doses of humor within our website. For instance, it is actually possible to summon Godzilla from within our site. Yes, Godzilla. A giant lizard just might stomp across your screen and shake your browser with the vibrations caused by its massive footsteps. Is this a joke? Nope. Click around in our site. Start to post a listing. If you’re clever enough, you will find out how to summon Godzilla. It’s sort of like summoning the smoke monster in the TV series “Lost.”

NYC Roommates Wanted

Do you need a roommate? In the rooms-for-rent section of NewYorkerApts.com, you can find posts from New Yorkers who are seeking the right person to reside in their available rooms. Many of us have found the lack of an effective roommate finder site to be bothersome. But at NewYorkerApts.com, we fully intend to resolve that dilemma by providing outstanding and superior online services. We also have NYC rentals. Many New Yorkers struggle in their search to locate the ideal residence. But we plan on changing that, too. Once NewYorkerApts.com conquers this market, the site will abound with NYC apartment listings. And if you’re a landlord, you can create one of those listings – right now! Just go to our main homepage, and create a listing. Then sit back and you will receive e-mails from prospective tenants. Don’t let your unit go unoccupied. Get some capital by getting a good tenant. The best part? It’s free to create a listing, for a limited time. And for those of you who are trying to connect with potential roommates, never fear – the rooms-for-rent section is free, as well.

It is only a matter of time before our site becomes the #1 place for no fee rentals in Manhattan. But we won’t neglect the other boroughs, either. You can post and search listings in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx, all of which are terrific places. You can also find affordable sublets. Sometimes, aspects of life can be uncertain – so why commit to a long-term rental if a sublet is right for you? We understand that everyone has different needs and preferences. Some people want vacation rentals, others prioritize luxury and are willing to pay a steeper price for it. Some people are students and are very budget-conscious. That’s why NewYorkerApts.com is committed to serving everyone in the Big Apple. We are determined to provide useful content in the form of a variety of listings – but we are also determined to keep you informed about what is going on in our city. Something is always happening in this city; it’s big and active. And that is why it is considered to be the greatest city in the world by many, many people.

So what is going on right now? Let’s check out the news. There has been some news recently about the “Varick Street Incubator” – a city-sponsored business launching pad. The city is trying to reverse the economic downtown by making efforts to help grow small businesses. $1.8 million has been spent so far! Worthwhile? A waste? You decide! Read more about this fascinating story over at NY Daily News.

We hope that all of the hard-working entrepreneurs in this city succeed and get to experience the American dream. As Sinatra said, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Right? Bloomberg remarked, “I am happy to say, the results are in and they are excellent.” At NewYorkerApts.com, we want excellent things for the people of the city that never sleeps. Why not stop by our homepage right now and explore furnished NYC apartment listings and interesting room-for-rent listings? Go to NewYorkerApts.com and find great Manhattan rentals.

The Fed Doesn’t Actually “Control” Short Term Interest Rates

By Scott Sumner

At least not in the sense that NYC controls the rent on apartments. This post was triggered by a recent Karl Smith post:

The interest rate on T-Bills is simply whatever the Fed wants it to be. T-Bills and bank excess bank reserves are essentially interchangeable. In normal times the value of excess reserves is the Fed Funds rate. Today it is the Interest on Reserves rate. However, both of those are essentially controlled by the Federal Reserve.

This is the conventional wisdom, but I thinks it’s (approximately) wrong. Because this is very confusing, let’s start off by discussing why controlling interest rates is not like controlling rents. Under rent control, the government legally mandates a particular maximum rent, and a shortage often results. The Fed doesn’t put any legal price controls on fed funds or T-bills. There is no shortage. Rather it adjusts the money supply as needed to keep short term rates at the desired level.

NYC News, courtesy of the best site for cheap Manhattan apartments

At NewYorkerApts.com, we try to help New Yorkers find homes in the greatest city in the world. Anyone who watches The Late Show with David Letterman knows that this is the greatest city in the world. Letterman-watchers, you have not been fed misinformation. It is very much true. As part of our endeavor to establish the connection between tenants and landlords, we work hard to create awareness about the site. The popularity of this site is directly linked with the value of our online services. And that is why we need your help to get the word out. Tell your friends about NewYorkerApts.com. Tell them that landlords can currently create NYC apartment listings for free. Tell your bros that they can browse the rooms-for-rent section and find possible roommates. Help us help this great city.

But this site is about more than affordable rentals in all 5 boroughs. It’s a site that is geared towards a specific community. We deeply care about that community, and that is why we have created this blog. This blog is a portal for the city that never sleeps. We want to spark conversations, and we want to inform you. So let’s see what is in the news today…

Home prices in NYC have dropped 2.9% in 12 months. This is obviously less than desirable for those of you who own homes. But try to be optimistic. It won’t stay like that forever. This is the greatest city in the world, remember? There are all kinds of sights to be seen in Manhattan. And there is Broadway, and off-Broadway, and off-off-Broadway. We will rebound! Some good news — on a nationwide basis, property values are steadying. This is due to improvements in the labor market. Read more about that here.

In other news, a JetBlue captain behaved erratically and had to be subdued by passengers. They actually locked him out of the cockpit. Read the riveting story in this USA Today article! To stay informed about the many other occurrences in our great city and in our vast world, consult your local newspaper. And if you haven’t already, consult NewYorkerApts.com to find apartment listings in TriBeCa, Chelsea, and other neighborhoods. Or, maybe you could find a furnished apartment in the Upper West Side. For those who are new to the area, the UWS is the area between West 59th Street and West 110th Street. And it’s a fantastic place to live. There are some buildings that have views looking out over Central Park. Being near Central Park is very convenient. Did you know that the park has a $37.4 million dollar annual budget? With that amount of money being spent, you may as well appreciate the relaxation and nature that Central Park has to offer.

We hope that you enjoyed this article. Don’t hesitate to comment on it or ask us questions. And remember, no fee NYC apartment rentals are just a mouse click away, thanks to NewYorkerApts.com! And if you only want to stay in The Big Apple temporarily, you might be lucky enough to find some short-term rentals, as well.
